Obstetrical Anesthesia
CA-1
Prerequisites:
- CA-1 Level
- At least 5 months of Basic Anesthesia Rotations
- Approval by the Clinical Competency Committee
- Usually in the first half of the CA2 year
Description of the Rotation: The general purpose of this one month block rotation is to introduce the resident to the perioperative management of the parturient in both routine and emergent situations. It will include intense instruction in the theory and practice of epidural, spinal, and general anesthesia for the parturient. The resident will become familiar with the special considerations for the mother and the baby, including resuscitation and emergency airway control. This rotation includes clinical experience with graded supervision, and an intense didactic program. The resident on this rotation will also learn how to appropriately obtained consults when necessary. An important component of the resident’s education will be effectively communicating with the patient as well as with the appropriate surgical teams and nursing services. Residents on this rotation will be available from 0630 until 1900 each working day (Wednesday relieved from 1530 to 1700 for conference). There will be no additional night call during this time. The resident will discuss any clinical problem with the appropriate anesthesiology faculty member and formulate a treatment plan with the anesthesiology faculty member.
Duration: 1 month, during the second half of the CA1 year.

CA-2
Prerequisites:
- One month of Introductory Obstetric Anesthesia
- Approval by the Director of Obstetric Anesthesia
- Approval by the Clinical Competency Committee
- Usually in the first half of the CA2 year
Description of the Rotation: The general purpose of this second month block rotation is to continue the residents education in the perioperative management of the parturient in both routine and emergent situations. An important component to this rotation is the application of basic skills learned in the first month rotation to pregnancies with pathology. Also expected will be more independence if planning anesthetics, performing anesthetics, and caring for the parturient postoperatively. Also expected will be a higher level of interpersonal skills in dealing with other members of the obstetric care team.
CA-3
Prerequisites:
- CA 3 Level
- At least 2 months of Obstetric Anesthesia
- Approval by the Director of Obstetric Anesthesia
- Approval of the Clinical Competence Committee
Description of the Rotation: This is an elective subspecialty rotation for CA-3 level residents who wish additional experience and training in Obstetrical Anesthesia. An option for the advanced subspecialty is an afternoon and night shift option, in which the senior resident has increased clinical responsibility of the OB floor. In order to be considered for this rotation, the resident must have demonstrated that he/she can perform a routine anesthetic on both healthy and high risk obstetrical patient with minimal staff assistance. However, as always, staff are immediately available to the resident when necessary.
