Overview
The residency in anesthesiology at LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport is a four-year program starting at the PGY-1 year. The Clinical Base Year (CBY) level is designed to provide the wide range of clinical experience that the resident needs prior to entering into his clinical anesthesia training. The CA-1 level is devoted to teaching the resident the basics of preoperative anesthesia care, general anesthesia, monitored anesthesia care, post-anesthesia care and anesthesia equipment. Later in the CA-1 level the emphasis shifts to the anesthetic care of children and pregnant women as well as critical care medicine. The CA-2 level is set aside for basic rotations in the subspecialties of anesthesiology. The CA-3 level is dedicated to the mastery of anesthesia, including advanced subspecialty experiences as requested by the resident. In addition, a Research Track is available in the CA-3 year, and the Department has research clinicians as well a basic scientists who will open their laboratories to support resident research.
